Description
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM‑5‑TR®) is the latest edition of the authoritative diagnostic reference published by the American Psychiatric Association. Released in March 2022, this edition updates the clinical text accompanying each disorder, incorporates over 70 revisions to diagnostic criteria, and introduces novel diagnostic entities such as Prolonged Grief Disorder, Unspecified Mood Disorder, and Stimulant-Induced Mild Neurocognitive Disorder.
Unlike the original DSM‑5, DSM‑5‑TR adds new symptom codes enabling clinicians to document suicidal behavior and nonsuicidal self-injury independently of a formal psychiatric diagnosis. It also refines terminology—such as replacing “neuroleptic medications” with “antipsychotic medications” and updating gender-related language in line with current standards. In addition, a dedicated Ethnoracial Equity and Inclusion Work Group reviewed the manual to ensure culturally sensitive, inclusive language and to highlight diagnostic nuances across diverse populations.
DSM‑5‑TR maintains alignment with ICD‑10‑CM codes, and includes redesigned classification tables, updated prevalence data, risk factors, and differential diagnosis guidance—making it the most comprehensive, current resource for clinicians, researchers, students, and allied mental health professionals.
